Cumene is the common name for isopropylbenzene, an organic compound that is based on an aromatic hydrocarbon with an aliphatic substitution. It is a constituent of crude oil and refined fuels. It is a flammable colorless liquid that has a boiling point of 152 °C. Nearly all the cumene that is produced as a pure compound on an industrial scale is converted to cumene hydroperoxide, which is an intermediate in the synthesis of other industrially important chemicals, primarily phenol and acetone. Cumene is produced from benzene and propylene, accounting for 20% of benzene demand and 4% of propylene demand. Cumene is made primarily for phenol and acetone production. Phenol/acetone production consumes approximately 98% of all cumene globally, so cumene demand is very closely tied to the phenol market. Cumene can also be used as a blending component in the gasoline pool, especially as a way to avoid benzene restrictions in gasoline. When cumene and its feedstocks become undervalued relative to energy, gasoline blenders can use cumene as a blending component, since it has a high octane rating. The use of cumene as a blending component will occur when its price falls below its alternate octane value.
